Police Force’s 184th anniversary celebration wraps up with ‘eventful’ Gymkhana

Following a month-long series of activities, the Guyana Police Force’s 184th-anniversary celebrations came to an exciting end with an eventful Gymkhana hosted at the Police Sports Ground on Sunday.

The month-long series of activities kicked off with a serene Drum Head church service, to the Fallen Heroes Wreath Laying Ceremony – honouring fallen comrades; to the Route March – showcasing skill and discipline at drills and musketry in the streets of Georgetown; to the Awards Ceremony – rewarding ranks for their commitment and efforts; to the tantalizing Duck Curry Competition; to the early-morning Fitness Walk; to the visionary and first-of-its-kind GPF Symposium; to the Commissioner’s mega Birthday Fun-Day; to the launch of the country-wide “Respect the Road” Safety Campaign; to the thrilling finals of the Annual Swimming and Athletics Championships and the fisticuffs of ‘Night of Fights’.

The Gymkhana event that followed saw members of the Police Force performing events such as gymnastics display, agility, scent work and obedience demonstration (Canine Section), late for work, horse race, battle of the mounties, tug-o-war, rescue under fire and A-class style jump (Mounted Branch), entertaining the scores of persons, many of whom bought along their children to witness the exciting action.

The on-field fun was not limited as many of the spectators who were parents had the opportunity to participate in a ‘mommy’ and ‘daddy’ race, as well as the kids who had their race of running one lap around the ground. First, second and third-place winners were all rewarded with monetary incentives for participating.

Sunday’s atmosphere at the Police Sports Club Ground was one of family-oriented fun, filled with abundant laughter, entertainment and amusement, but more particularly noticeable was the atmosphere of togetherness between individuals from all diverse backgrounds and walks of life enjoying themselves; a true representation of our Motto – ‘One People, One Nation, One Destiny’.

Evident from the tremendous involvement and turnout from members of the public in support of these activities, this can only be described as the most publicly engaging, diverse, eventful, and exciting Anniversary Month of the Guyana Police Force in years gone by.

This is a testimony of the commitment and effort, which is being led by Commissioner of Police Mr Clifton Hicken and his Admin Team, to create a more proactive, professional, accountable and people-oriented Guyana Police Force.

Among those gracing the occasion with their presence were Minister of Home Affairs, Hon. Robeson Benn; Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Ms Mae Toussaint Jr. Thomas-Meerabux; Commissioner of Police, Mr Clifton Hicken; Head of CANU, Mr James Singh; Deputy Commissioner ‘Administration’, Mr Calvin Brutus; Deputy Commissioner ‘Operations’, Mr Ravindradat Budhram along with Regional Commanders and other Senior and Junior Officers and other special invitees.
