Mother & Daughter-in-laws incident ends with house in flames

Authorities in Regional Division #5 are currently probing an alleged case of ‘Setting fire to dwelling house,’ reported to have occurred on May 11, 2024, around 11:00 hours, at Lot 30 Kingley Village, West Coast Berbice. The suspected perpetrator, identified as Treasha James, a 19-year-old unemployed female residing at the same address, is under investigation by the police.

Upon conducting inquiries, it was revealed that the targeted property belonged to Jean Harte and was a two-storeyed wooden and concrete structure located on the Southern side of Kingelly Public Road, West Coast Berbice, within a securely fenced yard. Notably, the victim and the suspect are identified as mother-in-law and daughter-in-law, respectively, with additional information indicating that the suspect is purportedly of unsound mind.

According to the victim’s account, she was present at home with the suspect when the latter allegedly rushed upstairs, informing her that she had ignited the mattress in the bedroom on the lower floor. Reacting swiftly, the victim descended to the lower level, where she observed smoke and promptly commenced efforts to disconnect the gas bottle. Both individuals then evacuated the premises as the fire rapidly engulfed the bedroom.

Following the activation of emergency services, the fire department was summoned and successfully extinguished the blaze. However, despite their prompt response, the structure sustained significant damage, ultimately being gutted by the fire.

Subsequently, law enforcement officers located and apprehended the suspect at Kingelly Public Road. She was duly informed of the allegations against her, cautioned, and placed under arrest. Presently, she remains in custody at Weldaad Police Station pending further legal proceedings.

The investigation into this incident remains ongoing as authorities continue to gather evidence and assess the circumstances surrounding the alleged arson.
