Body of male found in Sophia trench prompts investigation

On Monday, May 6, 2024, around 13:00hrs, an anonymous call reached the Turkeyen Police Station, alerting authorities to a motionless body in a trench located at Dennis Street between ‘C and D’ Fields in Sophia.

In response, police officers were dispatched to the scene, where they discovered the body of a male of African descent floating face down in the trench. The deceased was later identified as Monella Hamer of Pattensen Access Road, Turkeyen, by his brother, Marlon Hamer, who was present at the scene. Monella was clad in a black jersey and grey shorts.

According to inquiries, Monella was last seen at his residence on May 5, 2024, around 17:00hrs, which is situated in close proximity to the trench. It was also revealed that the deceased suffered from epilepsy.

Upon inspection, police officers found no visible signs of violence on the body. The scene was meticulously processed by police ranks before the body was escorted to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, where a doctor on duty pronounced Monella dead on arrival.

Currently, the body remains at the Memorial Gardens funeral home awaiting a post-mortem examination as investigations into the circumstances surrounding Monella Hamer’s death continue.
